Chapter 5: A Public Note

"Of course," I said into the phone. "Friday. I'll be there."

Gussie stared at me across the ballroom.

I hung up.

"You're going to apologize to that girl?"

"I'm going to the luncheon," I said. "That's all I said."

The luncheon was in the private dining room of the country club, under a chandelier the size of a Volkswagen.

Twenty-two ladies of the Silver Crescent committee sat at one long table in pastel jackets.

Mrs. Gaillard sat at the head.

She is sixty-one, with silver hair set and pearls the size of chickpeas.

For three years she has introduced me as Truett's little friend.

Margot sat at her right hand, in red.

She'd put a little bandage on her wrist.

It was the first thing everybody looked at.

"Posey," Mrs. Gaillard said. "How brave of you."

I took the empty seat at the far end.

Somebody's grandmother passed me the rolls.

We had chicken salad and tomato aspic, and Margot told the story of her fall three times.

In every version the floor was a little more dangerous.

When the coffee came, Mrs. Gaillard tapped her glass with a spoon.

"Ladies. Before we vote on the court, Posey has something she'd like to say to Margot."

Every head turned.

Margot folded her hands under her chin and made her eyes big and wet.

I stood up.

I took one of my cream cards out of my purse.

"I was asked to apologize," I said. "I've never been very good at it. My grandmother always said a thank-you note does more good than a sorry. So I wrote one."

Mrs. Gaillard's mouth went thin.

I read it.

"Dear Margot."

I smiled at her down the length of the table.

"Thank you for coming to my birthday dinner. It wouldn't have been the same without you."
