Chapter 4: Sunday Lunch
Marguerite Hargrove still held her Sunday lunch, even with her son's marriage broken open on her doorstep.
She phoned me on Saturday night herself.
"One o'clock," she said. "Dalton tells me you've been unwell and you've said unkind things about Lydia. I would like to hear them from you, at my table."
"I'll be there," I said.
Agnes drove me, and she stayed in the van with a thermos and a crossword.
"If you're not out in forty minutes," she said, "I come in with the bread knife."
The house in Whitefish Bay had a white door and a brass knocker shaped like a pineapple.
I went up the steps on crutches, my ribs tight under my sweater, with the ultrasound folded in my coat pocket.
The long table was full of guests.
Marguerite sat at the head in a navy suit and pearls.
Dalton was at her right.
Lydia sat across from him in a cream blouse, with her hand wrapped around a glass of water.
Beside her sat the wives of two of the firm's biggest investors, and an uncle who had said maybe six words to me in three years.
Every head turned.
"Cora," said Marguerite. "Sit. You are very thin."
"I'm not staying for lunch."
"Then you will say what you came to say."
I laid the folded paper on the white tablecloth beside her fork and smoothed it flat.
"Please read the name at the top."
She put on her glasses.
Nobody spoke.
She read the name and the number.
She read the line under it, in her son's handwriting.
"Where did you get this?"
"Dalton's locked desk drawer. It was there last Sunday. Lydia was eleven weeks along, three days before my third anniversary."
"That's an old scan," Dalton said at once. "It's a friend's. It's not what it looks like."
