Chapter 27: Gone
"Go to Fall River," Zeke said in the yacht club lot. "Tonight. My father's got a spare room and a shotgun."
"No."
"Ris."
"I spent ten years in a house on a bluff with a gate," I said. "I'm not hiding in another one."
"He's got nothing left to lose."
"Then he'll have to come and lose it at Mavis's."
I went home to the diner.
When I came down at six the next morning, there was a man sitting on an upturned fish crate outside the front door, with a thermos.
The man from page forty-seven.
"Morning," he said.
"What are you doing?"
"Sitting."
At noon the man from page one hundred and two took over the crate.
At six that night it was the co-op president, with his wife and a folding chair for her.
By the third day there was a list taped to the inside of the diner window, in the co-op president's square hand.
Two-hour shifts. Twenty-four hours. Names I'd typed on releases three weeks ago.
Mavis read it with her arms folded, went into the kitchen and came back with her father's old double-barrel and stood it behind the register, beside the pie case.
