The Other Man in My Wife's Tent novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: Ice Fishing

At nine the guides split the camp into trek groups for the long walk to the frozen lake.

Freja checked the list on the shelter wall and went pale behind her scarf.

"They put Lindsay in our group," she said. "Dean's leading the other one, thank God."

"Then I stay at the back," I said.

"You take the supply sled. Nobody looks at the man pulling the sled."

She was right.

I harnessed myself to a plastic sled loaded with water jugs and a camp stove, pulled my hat down to my goggles and fell in behind the line of walkers.

Freja went ahead with the others.

My wife was ten feet in front of me.

I knew her walk better than my own.

She took small quick steps and swung her left arm more than her right, and she was wearing the blue jacket with the torn cuff that I had offered to stitch for two years.

Twice she looked over her shoulder at the trail.

Both times her eyes slid right over me.

By the second mile, Freja had dropped back to walk beside her.

I couldn't hear the start of it, only Lindsay's bright voice and Freja answering in a softer one I'd never heard from her.

It was a good voice.

Warm, a little shy, the voice of a woman who couldn't believe her luck.

Then the wind turned, and I caught every word.
