Chapter 13: The Grave
Lars read Judson's text twice and handed the phone back.
"Ignore it," he said.
"Lars, it's your mother."
"It's my mother's chemotherapy," he said. "She's been gone for years, and he wants her in a newspaper."
"The transcript only has half of it."
"Page two hundred and nine only has the part that makes my father look like a thief," he said.
He pulled on his jeans and sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me.
"I don't want you to answer him," he said. "I want you to come somewhere with me in the morning."
"Where?"
"Waukesha."
I knew what was in Waukesha, and I did not ask again.
We left before it was light.
The cemetery sat on a low hill outside town, and the snow on it was untouched except for one line of boot prints.
Lars parked at the gate and carried a thermos and a paper bag.
I walked half a step behind him, in my navy coat, with my hands in my pockets.
The stone was gray granite and plain.
