Chapter 14: The Board
Judson's notice of an emergency board meeting arrived at noon, by courier, on cream paper.
It said two o'clock that afternoon, at the Haskell Freight offices on the south side.
The only item on the agenda was the "status of the thirty percent shareholder."
"He wants to take your proxy away," said Dolores, reading over my shoulder. "He'll say Mavis can't think straight."
"Mavis drove herself to Lars's house with a pie," I said.
"Then I'll tell him that."
"No, kid," said Dolores. "Let her tell him."
Mavis picked me up at one in the cream sedan.
She wore her good navy coat and her pearls and sat very straight.
"Did you eat lunch?" she asked.
"No."
"Neither did I," she said. "Let's be hungry in there."
The company's offices were a brick building next to a yard full of trailers, with a lobby that smelled like diesel and floor wax.
A receptionist stood when she saw Mavis and sat again when she saw me.
The boardroom was on the second floor.
A long table, eight leather chairs, and a window over the loading dock.
