Chapter 16: The Offer
"You can say it from there," I said.
I stayed beside my car with the door open and my keys in my fist.
Daphne came down one step and stopped.
She looked smaller in sneakers, with no polish on her at all.
"Judson is going to lose," she said. "I've seen the way his partner looks at him."
"Is that your offer?"
"My offer is that I help you do it."
She held up the keys again.
"I know everything he's done," she said.
"Last summer he sat at my kitchen table for three weeks, practicing your signature on a legal pad."
I did not move.
"He laughed about the E," she said.
"He said you'd never look at a wire again, because you'd stopped caring."
"Say that to a judge."
"I will," said Daphne. "In front of anyone."
