Chapter 20: The Gala, Second Course
"Turn that off," said Judson.
Nobody turned it off.
He looked toward the glass booth at the back, where Dolores stood with her arms folded, and then he looked at me.
"Ella," he said, in the voice he used for children. "This is not the place."
"It's item four," said Mavis.
She had risen from her chair at table one, one hand on her cane.
Her voice carried to the back wall, because it always had.
"I hold thirty percent of this company," she said.
"I placed an item on tonight's agenda, and I ask that the chair recognize me."
"Mother, sit down."
"Mr. Haskell." The retired banker stood at the second table, napkin in his fist. "She is entitled. The agenda was filed on Thursday."
A murmur went around the ballroom.
Judson looked at the banker and saw a man who had read the bylaws on the drive over.
He stepped back from the microphone.
