Chapter 13: Printouts
Dear Late Shift,
Someone took your letter out of a drawer and made it a flyer. That was never yours to carry, and it was never his to print. I am so sorry. I am here, and I am not going anywhere.

That note was waiting in my inbox at 8:51, sent from the Lark address.
I read it standing in the middle of the bullpen, holding a paper copy of myself.
The freight elevator banged.
Marguerite walked out of it in her long gray coat and stopped.
She looked at the desks, and the white sheets, and the tulips in my arms, and me.
Her face did something I had never seen it do, and then it went completely flat.
She did not say a word to me.
She walked to the nearest desk, picked up the page, and folded it once.
Then she went to the next desk, and the next.
Robin understood first, and started collecting from the other side of the room.
The staff came in by twos and threes, hanging up coats, and stopped in the doorway one after another.
The intern read the page standing up and went red to his ears.
The web editor said, "Is that real?" and Marguerite held out her hand without answering until the web editor gave it to her.
By nine twenty she had all thirty-one pages in a stack against her chest.
Gordon stood in his office doorway with his coffee, watching.
Marguerite turned to face the bullpen.
"Everyone, please stay where you are," she said.
Thirty people stopped moving.
"This is a private letter from a staff member to the advice column," she said.
