Chapter 17: Day Thirty
Damon crossed the lobby of the flagship with Elias a pace behind him and did not say it.
He had thirty-one ways to start the sentence.
He had run them all down the stairwell in his head.
None of them survived contact with the man's face.
He had stood over a ruptured aorta with less terror than he felt about three plain words in a marble foyer.
He did not say it at the board lunch, or in the car, or on the stairs of the building on Duane Street.
Elias did not ask.
That was what Damon could not stand.
At the penthouse door that night he took Elias by the left wrist, turned it over, and laid two fingers on the pulse.
Elias went completely still.
"A hundred and twelve," Damon said. "At rest."
"I'm tired," Elias said.
"You're something."
He heard it come back at him in his own voice, and so did Elias, and the corner of that scarred mouth moved.
Damon did not let go of the wrist.
"Come in," he said. "I'm not saying it tonight."
