Chapter 21: Moonlight on the Steps

The moon rose white over the Summit, and the nine pillars of the Altar had dimmed to a soft glow.

Everyone else had gone down the steps hours ago, with torches, talking in low voices.

Wanqing came up the last stair alone and found him waiting on the terrace's edge.

The chair stood beside the stone balustrade, and he sat in it with his hair loose and his robe open at the throat.

The whole mountain lay below him in moonlight.

"You came," he said.

"You said moonrise."

"I said a great many things this morning."

She crossed the flat stone and stopped in front of him.

"Ask," she said.

He looked up at her, and she saw that his hands were not quite steady on the arms of the chair.

"The contract is finished," he said. "You owe the sect nothing, and you owe me nothing.

"You have a seat in your own name and a pass for any gate in the south.

"What do you want, Wanqing?"

"To stay."

"As what?"

"As your wife." She said it flatly, because her voice would not do anything else.

"Not for the sect. Not for the poison. I want the bed, and the quilt, and the ugly pine chair, and you."

His shoulders lowered, trembling slightly.

"I'll ask you again properly," he said. "With witnesses, and a red candle, and Bao crying into his sleeve. Tonight I only want the answer."
