Chapter 12: The Ledger Page

Kray crossed the floor.

Two hundred people watched him go by.

Nobody spoke, and nobody blocked his way.

"Mr. Guffey," he said, and stopped in front of my father's wheelchair. "How is the heart?"

"Get out of my casino," my father said.

His voice shook, and I realized his hands were shaking too.

"I will. In two minutes." Kray smiled at the room. "I thought your daughter and your customers would like to see a little paperwork first."

"Dad," I said. "Don't answer him."

"You may want him to answer," Kray said.

He opened the leather folder.

Inside lay two sheets of yellowed paper, each in a clear plastic sleeve.

He held the first one up to the light.

"These are the pages Cade carried to the prosecutor," he said, for everyone.

I heard Cade breathe in beside me.

"I never knew whose they were," Kray said.

"Not until the night after the report went in. That night I had a very frightened visitor."

"Stop," my father whispered.

"He wrote me a note. Here it is, in his own hand, on the Lucky Wren's letterhead."

He turned the second sleeve toward the room.

I read it from ten feet away.

It was short.

"The man you want is Cade Merrick, of Las Vegas. I mailed him the box.
