Chapter 13: The Ash Princess Goes Home
Nobody in the hall breathed, and Auren Vask was the first to move.
He came down the dais steps slowly, in front of three hundred of his own people.
The Ember Speaker half rose, and his mouth was already open.
"Sit," said Auren, without looking at him.
The Speaker sat.
He stopped in front of me, close enough that I felt his fever through my gown.
"My wife goes where she likes," he said, loud enough for the back wall.
"And she comes back when she likes."
My father's smile stretched thin, because he had heard a threat and could not name it.
Auren took my hand to kiss it.
His mouth brushed my knuckles, and something small and cold slid into my palm.
I closed my fingers over the iron key.
It was still warm from his chest.
He had carried it eleven years, and he put it in my hand in front of the man who had caged the door it fit.
