Chapter 12: Persuasion
I almost turned around and walked out.
I stood just inside the door with my clutch in both hands, and my heart going so hard it hurt.
He was real.
He had shoulders, under a dark coat, and the back of a head, and a glass of something amber he wasn't drinking.
I made my feet move.
I walked the length of the bar and sat down two stools away from him.
I didn't look at him.
If I looked at his face, I'd lose my nerve, and I'd come here to say something with my nerve intact.
The bartender came over.
"Just water," I said.
He put it down and went away to the other end.
The man beside me didn't move.
He didn't turn.
He just sat there, the book face down beside his glass, and waited, the way he'd always waited on the other side of the screen.
"I'm going to say this without looking at you," I said to my water glass. "Is that all right?"
Silence.
Then a small movement.
A nod, maybe.
I took a breath.
"You kept me alive this year," I said. "I mean that. I'd go to bed in that house and lie there and think nobody in the world knew one true thing about me. And then you'd write. And you knew everything."
My voice wobbled.
I steadied it.
