Chapter 15: The Department Meeting

I sat up in the hotel bed with the sheet around me and scrolled.

There were eleven pieces.

Each one was a few lines long, set in bold, with gaps between them.

"He hasn't touched me in a way that meant anything in two years."

"I think about you when he's in bed with me."

"I'm going to leave him. I just need to know you'll be there."

At the bottom someone had typed one more line in plain text.

"The only witness in the Thaxter review. Judge her credibility for yourselves."

The sender was the associate dean's office account.

Eliot was already out of bed and pulling on his trousers.

His face had gone the flat, careful color it went at faculty dinners.

"How many people are on that list?" I asked.

"Every member of the faculty. Four hundred and something."

"And their spouses?"

"Some of them forward everything to their spouses."

I read the second line again.

I'd written that sentence in May, and it hadn't ended there.

She had cut it off in the middle.

"She took the ends off," I said.

"She always does."
