Chapter 14: Front Row

Hallie's POV

By Saturday morning half of Valor State knew my face.

A boy in the quad pointed me out to his friend and said, "That's the SnapCount girl," not quietly.

A girl in my statistics class said she'd followed the account since freshman year and asked if I'd sign her phone case.

I said no, and then I said thank you, and then I walked into a pole.

Dani took my elbow and steered me the rest of the way to the Rail.

"You're famous," she said.

"I'm a joke."

"Not to everyone."

The diner proved her right.

The regulars were in the counter seats, the old men who tipped in quarters and complained about the coffee.

One of them pushed a slice of lemon pie down the counter without a word.

"On the house," he said. "Rotten thing that boy did, putting you up on a screen."

"Which boy?"

"Either one."

I laughed, and my eyes stung, and I ate the pie.

My phone had buzzed all night.

Four hundred thousand followers, and nearly all of them wanted to know the same thing: was it true, and would there be one more post?

I hadn't answered any of them.

At ten the left tackle came in for a to-go order and set a folded paper on the counter.

"Depth chart," he said. "Coach posted it an hour ago."

I read it.

Starting quarterback, Truitt.

Under it, in small print, Sullivan, Gage (disciplinary: unauthorized use of the stage).
