Chapter 13: The Governor's Mansion

Clyde came into the kitchen barefoot, in jeans and an undershirt, rubbing his eyes.

He smiled when he saw me.

Then he saw Elena, and the smile went careful.

"Morning," he said.

I turned Elena's phone face down on the table.

"Did Roscoe Strother send you a check yesterday?"

He stopped.

He looked at the phone, and then at Elena, and then at me.

"Yes," he said.

That was all.

Just yes.

He didn't say how much. He didn't say what for.

He stood there in his bare feet with his jaw set.

He waited to see what I'd do.

I'd seen that look on his face when people laughed at him.

I'd thought it was pride.

Now I didn't know what it was.

"Then I don't need to know anything else," I said.

"Isabella."

"Thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Bennett."

He flinched.

Elena picked up her phone and put it in her coat.

I went to the spare room and put on my navy dress. It was dry now and stiff as cardboard.

I left Clyde's father's flannel shirt folded on the bed.

When I came out, Clyde wasn't in the kitchen.
