Chapter 22: Congress

I watched it twice, standing at the window in my grandmother's house with the old vaquero's phone in my hand.

Clyde watched it over my shoulder.

"Monday," he said. "That's tomorrow."

"I know."

"Sale's Tuesday."

"I know that too."

He put his hat on.

"Then I reckon I'll see the inside of your Congress first," he said.

The National Congress of Honduras sits in a gray stone building in the center of Tegucigalpa.

The chamber is a half circle of wooden desks under a dome, with a gallery above and television cameras on every side.

On Monday morning every seat in it was full.

The president of Congress sat in a high chair on the dais with a bell at his elbow.

He'd known me since I was a girl. He didn't look at me when I came in.

There was no chair for the queen on the floor.

I stood.

Clyde sat in the front row of the gallery above me, between my guard captain and an empty seat.

He'd borrowed a jacket from the captain. The sleeves came past his knuckles.

Elena spoke first.
