Chapter 23: The Chamberlain's Keys

The interpreter said it in Spanish.

Doce por ciento.

It went around the chamber.

Elena didn't move.

Her pen stayed where it was, an inch above her folder.

"Mr. Strother is upset," she said. "He'll say anything."

"Upset?" Strother slapped the table. "I sent you four hundred thirty-two thousand dollars, lady. Twelve percent of three point six million, soon as the queen signed. You told me she'd sign. You said you'd handled her since she was a little girl."

He jabbed his finger at Andrés.

"Into an account at his bank. His bank! You think I'm going to jail in Texas while you two go to a wedding?"

The president of Congress rang his bell.

Nobody heard it.

Deputies were on their feet. Somebody in the gallery was shouting.

I looked at Elena.

She was looking at me.

For the first time since I was twelve, she didn't have anything to read aloud.

"Is it true?" I asked her.

She closed her folder.

"Everything I did," she said, "I did to keep you on that throne."
