Chapter 12: River Road
Ronan turned off the engine.
The rain ticked on the roof of the gray car, and neither of them looked at the other.
"You remember," Cora said.
"Yes."
"You woke up on Tuesday morning, and you knew."
"Five o'clock," Ronan said. "A clock that said the day of your divorce."
She stared out of the windshield at the wet gravel and the empty porches.
Her whole body felt light and unsteady.
She had carried this alone for a week.
She had waited on every street corner for someone to look at her and say, you too.
It had been him, beside her, the whole time.
"Tell me," she said. "All of it. And don't leave anything out to be kind."
He told her.
He told her about the pharmacy and the card, and the two years he had kept his distance.
He told her about the bend on the river road, the taillights leaving the pavement, the glass.
He told her he had held her hand until the ambulance came, and that it had been cold.
His voice stayed level the whole time, and he looked at the dashboard.
When he finished, she said nothing for a long while.
"The card," she said at last.
"I'm sorry. I should have left you alone."
"You were the man at the pharmacy." Her voice cracked. "I never looked at your face. I was so tired. I threw it on the floor and I never even looked."
"You had every right."
"You were the only person who came."
He said nothing.
She turned in her seat and hit his shoulder with her fist, once, hard.
