Chapter 18: Yvonne's Offer
I read it standing on the porch, with the bear under my arm and a stranger holding a camera on the lawn.
I had not noticed him until then. He stood at the foot of the steps with a lens trained on the door.
"For the family archive," Yvonne said quickly. "A signing should be recorded."
"A signing should be witnessed," I said. "You brought a witness who works for you."
I turned to the first page.
It was good paper, and the language was the language of people who bill by the hour.
Section one gave me the name Wynne Yvonne Sedgwick and the standing of a daughter of the house.
Section two made me the owner of Yvonne's shares in Sedgwick Hotels and of my grandfather's trust, which together came to half the company.
I read that twice. It was more money than I had ever pictured in one sentence.
"Half the hotels," I said.
"It's yours. It was always yours."
"And what does section four say?"
Yvonne's smile slipped by a hair.
I read it aloud for the lens, slowly.
"The Acknowledged Daughter shall make herself available for any medical evaluation or procedure the family physician deems necessary for the health of a family member."
The camera operator shifted his feet.
"That's boilerplate," Yvonne said.
"It has my kidney in it."
"It has nothing of the kind. It says medical."
"Mother," I said, and heard how strange the word sounded in my mouth. "You tried to buy Pearl's silence with her hospital bills."
