Chapter 18: The Envelope

The Livingstone Hotels ballroom held three hundred people, and every one of them looked at the door when I walked in.

I wore the bottle-green dress with the square neck and the long sleeves.

Winslow had my hand tucked in his arm, and the lighthouse ring on his finger caught the chandelier.

A woman near the champagne tower said, "That's the girl," in a whisper meant to be heard.

Another one said, "She's bigger than I thought."

Winslow leaned down, and his mouth brushed my ear.

"I'm going to say this once," he said, quietly. "Every inch of what you've got on is going to be on my bedroom floor tonight, and I'm going to take my time over each one."

"Winslow. We're in public."

"That's why I said it now."

My face was hot, and I held my head up.

I walked to the front of the room with my back straight and my hand on his arm.

Mrs. Livingstone was waiting in a chair by the first table, in gray silk and her mother's pearls.

She had been out of the hospital for two days.

She took my hand in both of hers.

"I read the letter," she said. "Colton brought it. I read it twice."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry for the nurse's letter. It's the only honest page anyone left me." She looked up. "You came."

"I said I would."

"You said a lot of things," said Mrs. Livingstone, and almost smiled. "I'm learning that you do them."
