Chapter 20: What He Decided

The lantern belonged to the old captain with the gray beard.

He lowered it and looked down at her on the pavilion step.

"Miss Tang," he said. "The young master told us to see you home."

"Where is he?"

"He didn't say."

She let them walk her through the sleet to the Tang gate, four silent riders in a square around her.

Nobody asked what she had in her robe.

Her father was waiting up in the study, his hands flat on the desk.

She told him she had found something, and that he must not ask what yet.

He looked at her for a long time.

"Does it save your brother?"

"I think it saves everyone."

"Then sleep, little rabbit."

She did not sleep.

She sat on the edge of her bed with the yellow order in her lap.

She watched the gray square of the window until it went white.

At noon, the gate bell rang.

She ran.

In the street stood a black horse with two riders.

Her brother Zhengyu sat in front, ragged and swearing and alive, with a bruise the size of a plate on his jaw.

Behind him, with one arm around his waist to keep him upright, sat Qin Hanzhou.

He was soaked to the knee and gray with fatigue.

"Hello, sister," said Zhengyu weakly. "I've been rescued by a man with no manners."

"How?" said her father, taking his son off the horse.
