Chapter 23: The Ruling

The Emperor spoke the sentences himself, one after another, in a voice that grew thinner with each.

"Wei Chengjue. You are stripped of your rank, your title and your name in the imperial register."

Wei stood bareheaded in the red hall and did not look up.

"You will keep the imperial tombs for the rest of your life."

"You will sweep the stone, light the lamps and speak to no one."

"If you leave the hill, you will be killed."

"Majesty," Wei said at last, very softly. "Father."

"I have no son by that name."

The guards led him out.

He walked between them with his back straight.

He did not look at Shuyao again, and she was surprised to find she did not want him to.

"Noble Consort."

The Consort rose from her cushion, white to the lips.

"You are confined to the cold palace until you die. Your brother's salt mines will be your brother's, and you may write to him there."

She made no sound.

Two maids helped her out.

"Jiang Wanrou."

Wanrou, still on her knees, lifted her head.

She had stopped crying.

Her face was swollen, her hair a ruin, and her eyes were calm.

"You carried a cup meant to kill a bride on her wedding day," said the Emperor.

"The bride's family may speak for you. Marquis?"
