Chapter 14: Release
Silvan's POV
I did not sleep in the bed.
I sat on the hall floor beside Walter's donut, with my back against the wall and my coat still on.
The front door had been shut for six hours, and I kept listening for the sound of it opening.
Around two, Deborah came down in her robe with her cane tucked under her arm.
She lowered herself onto the bottom stair, which took her a while, and said nothing.
"Say it," I said.
"I never said you should lie to her."
"I know."
"I said you should tell her you loved her, and you told her you'd handle it." She sniffed. "That was my fault. I gave you a bad grandmother's advice."
"It was good advice. I didn't take it."
"No." She looked at the leash on its hook. "What are you going to do?"
"Fix it."
"Not by deciding for her."
"Gran, I know."
"Do you?" Deborah said, mildly. "Because the last time you fixed something quietly it took you a month and a stranger's phone call."
I put my head back against the plaster.
She was right, and I had no way to argue.
At seven I wrote Willa one text, short, and sent it before I could improve it.
Then I took my wallet out and slid a card from behind my license.
It was the one the clinic had mailed to my office in April, after the donation.
A paw print in the corner, a printed thank-you, and under it, in blue ink: Walter was lucky to have you. So were we. Willa.
I had read it so often that the fold had gone soft.
