Chapter 22: The Chair

Cora's POV

The boardroom of the Hartwell Group had a table long enough to land a small plane on.

A dozen board members sat around it in dark suits.

At the far end, in the chair that was usually Levi's, sat the vice chair, a silver-haired man who smiled at me without any warmth.

Levi had been moved to the chair beside the door.

I looked at him when I came in.

He gave me the smallest shake of his head. Don't do it for me.

I looked at his hands flat on the table and thought of them on my back at Mount Calvary, and kept walking.

"Miss Moynihan," said the vice chair. "We weren't expecting you. This is a private session."

"Miss Hartwell," said Margaret behind me, "has more right to be in this room than anyone at this table."

She had come in at my shoulder in charcoal wool.

She took the empty chair at the near end and set her handbag on the table with a thump.

"Margaret, of course," said the vice chair. "But the motion before the board is regrettably simple."

He spread his hands.

"In light of the public disorder of the last month, we propose to remove Mr. Rhodes as president and trustee. The trust shares, being unclaimed, would pass to the foundation."

"Unclaimed," I said.

"Unless you're prepared to sign."

He slid a folder down the table. It stopped in front of me.

I opened it. The pages were thick and the tabs were yellow, and every yellow tab had a line for a signature.

I had thought about this moment for weeks. I had pictured it as a cage.

"Do you have a pen?" I said.

Someone handed me one.

I turned to the last page, which was the one that mattered. It said, Cordelia Rose Hartwell, in neat black type.

The room waited.
