Chapter 16: The Night Before the Ring
On the last night before the ring, Demelza found Rafe on the lodge porch with his thermos and no coffee in it.
The moon was one night short of full.
It hung over the valley, fat and white, and the Ridge was so bright she could count the fence posts.
"You should be asleep," he said.
"So should you."
"I'm the one who has to stand at your back tomorrow and do nothing. I can sleep in the car."
"Come inside."
He looked at her.
She had already unlaced her boots and left them at the door.
"Demelza."
"I'm not asking because of the bond," she said. "I want to say that first, so you hear it."
He set the thermos down on the rail.
"The bond picked you," she said. "It didn't ask me. I'm going to walk into that ring tomorrow and do what I came to do. Then I'm going to choose you, with my own mouth, in daylight."
"Demelza."
"Tonight I'm just taking what's mine."
She took his hand and led him up the stairs.
In the attic she shut the door with her heel, and pushed him back against it, and kissed him.
He made a sound low in his chest and let her do it.
She pulled his shirt over his head and ran her nails down his ribs, and watched the muscles jump.
"Take mine off," she said.
He did.
His hands were not slow this time.
He dragged her shirt up and over her head, and found her breasts with his mouth, and sucked until her knees gave.
"Wall," she said. "Hold me up."
He lifted her.
She wrapped her thighs around his hips and felt how hard he was through his jeans, pressed hot and heavy where she wanted him.
