Chapter 10: I'm With Her
On Monday morning every phone in Studio A was lit.
I felt it the moment I walked through the door.
Heads bent, whispers flew, and dancers who normally ignored me stared at me with their mouths slightly open.
The girl with the granola bars caught my sleeve.
"It's in the company chat," she whispered. "Since six a.m."
"What is?"
She held up her screen.
There I was, backed against a rack of coats in a green dress, with Sutton's hand fisted in the fabric and her mouth on mine.
The caption said: Tidewater's new sisters. Don't they look close?
My knees went to water.
Across the room Lydia sat on the floor stretching, copper hair braided, dainty as a cat.
She had not even bothered to look innocent.
"Margo," the girl said. "I'm sorry. I'd delete it, but it's been forwarded forty times."
"It's fine," I said.
It was the opposite of fine.
I had lived through a lot of things in that building, and nothing had ever made me want to throw up on the floor.
Wallace's face rose in my mind, and then my mother's.
Then the door opened and Sutton walked in.
She wore her warm-up jacket zipped to her chin and a rehearsal bag over her shoulder.
She stopped in the doorway, and I watched her read the room.
Every eye in the studio was on her.
Every phone was on her too.
She looked at Lydia, still stretching.
