The donor room smelled of lilies and money.
Forty people sat at round tables under the portrait of the academy's founder, and every one of them stopped talking when I walked in alone.
I was wearing the green dress from the board dinner, because it was the only thing I owned that matched the room.
Wallace and my mother sat at a table near the windows.
My mother half rose, and Wallace put his hand over hers.
He had not known about the invitation, but he had decided to watch.
Philippa and Lydia waited at the head table with a leather folder between them.
Lydia wore white again, and her copper hair was twisted up with a pearl pin.
Her mother sat on her left.
"Margo," Lydia said warmly, to the room as much as to me. "You came. Sit, please."
"I'll stand."
"Don't be difficult. We have wonderful news."
Philippa folded her hands on the folder.
