Chapter 18: The Board Convenes
"What note?" I said.
"The note you wrote," Lydia said. "'Break a leg.' With a little heart."
"Cute."
Sutton went rigid beside me.
She had said nothing about the note to anyone in that room.
"You knew she wrote it," Lydia said to the company, loud and bright. "You all heard Sutton's lovely speech."
"She wrote a note telling Sutton to break her leg. And then Sutton's leg broke."
A few of them frowned.
It was such an ugly trick that for a moment it nearly worked.
"Break a leg," said the granola girl, suddenly, "is what you say to a dancer."
Lydia looked at her.
"You wrote it on Sutton's mirror yourself before every opening," the girl said. "In lipstick. I've seen it. 'Break a leg, darling.'"
"Everyone in this room has seen it."
A boy by the barre barked a laugh.
Somebody said, "She did, she did."
Lydia's face went through three colors in two seconds.
"I'd like to know," I said, very quietly, "how you knew about a note, Lydia."
