Chapter 21: Tidewater
I did not move.
I held the handkerchief and the green-handled blade against my chest in the pitch dark.
"Lydia," I said.
"Hello, Margo."
Her voice came from somewhere near the orchestra rail, light and unhurried.
"Sutton is going to dance tomorrow on a clean pair of shoes," she said. "You'll see to that. You're very good at it."
"Come out where I can see you."
"No, I don't think I will."
Sutton's footsteps pounded down the corridor behind me, and a flashlight beam swung across the wing.
"Margo?"
"She's in the house."
The beam raked across the seats.
The house was empty.
A fire door slapped shut at the back, and then the guard's flashlight came bobbing down the aisle, his crossword still in one hand.
Lydia was gone.
He swore he had seen nobody come in.
Wallace had a policeman at the stage door within half an hour, and a second one by the back entrance.
Sutton sat on the dressing table with her ankle taped, white-faced, and said only one thing.
"She'll come tomorrow."
