"You said no to Paris," I said from the stairs.
Sutton turned on the floor with the phone still in her hand.
"You were listening."
"You were loud."
"I was calm."
"You were calm and loud. Sutton, that was the best offer of your life."
"It was an offer for a woman who dances alone."
She stood, careful of the ankle, and crossed the floor to me.
"I spent two years dancing alone," she said. "I'm good at it. I'm tired of it."
"I'm not your reason to give up a company."
"You're not my reason," she said. "You're my partner. That's a different thing, and I'm not going anywhere that doesn't have a place for it."
I opened my mouth to argue.
"Also," she said, "I told them to watch the recording of Tidewater and call me back if they could count to two."
I started to laugh.
I could not help it.
"That is the worst negotiation I have ever heard."
"It's a gamble."
"It's a very arrogant gamble."
"I learned from the best," she said, and kissed me against the banister until my knees gave out.
