Chapter 15: Lindsey Takes the Floor
The Women's Club fall luncheon was held in the ballroom of the hotel on Front Street.
A hundred and forty women were eating chicken salad when we walked in.
My mother came first, on her cane, with Gram's hatbox under her arm.
I came behind her with Lindsey.
At the head table the president of the club turned her whole body to face her salad.
My mother nodded at the room, and we took the back table by the coat rack.
At the podium stood a banner that said MOTHERS OF MARIETTA in gold letters.
Barbara stood in front of it in navy blue, with her hair done and a stack of index cards.
"A mother's love," she was saying, "does not keep score."
"Some of you have heard hard things this week about my family," she said. "I am a private person, and I won't speak of them.
"But a child can be taken advantage of, and it is the adults who must answer."
She looked up from the card, toward the back of the room, and stopped.
Lindsey had stood.
"Darling," Barbara said, into the microphone, with a thin crack in her voice. "Sit down. We'll talk after lunch."
"You said you'd call me yesterday, Mom."
Lindsey walked up the center aisle between the round tables.
She carried a stack of paper in a rubber band, and her chin was level.
"I'm going to talk for about two minutes," she said. "Then I'll go."
Barbara's hand went flat on the podium.
She stopped in front of the third table and put the rubber-banded stack on the cloth next to somebody's roll.
"These are my bank statements," she said. "The ones that were passed around this week. There are eleven years of them here, and nobody has seen the other lines."
She turned so the whole room could hear her.
