Chapter 22: Two Extra Places
By the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Lindsey had been out of the sunporch for nine days.
She had an apartment over the hardware store on Greene Street, with a radiator that knocked, and a desk next to mine at the library.
She shelved carts with the terrifying neatness of a woman raised by a decorator.
At six o'clock that evening she and Ray came up our porch steps carrying a pie between them, each with a hand under the tin.
"Lemon," Ray announced.
"I know," said my mother, from the stove. "You told me three times on the phone."
"I took lessons."
"From whom?"
"A woman at the grocery who made me stand there and watch her do the crust." Ray set it on the counter with enormous care. "Forty minutes, Peggy. She said I overworked it."
My mother lifted the dish towel and looked at the edge.
"It's not crimped like a maniac," she said. "That's a start."
The kitchen was full of food the night before.
Two turkeys were thawing in the sink, because my mother does not trust one turkey.
Ray was put on potatoes.
He held the peeler.
Tom was at the school until seven, finishing something with a tarp.
I stood at the counter chopping celery for the stuffing, and I reached for the bag of raisins on the shelf.
"What are you doing?" my mother said.
"The stuffing."
"With raisins."
"It's a family recipe."
"It's a crime," said Lindsey, from the table, at the exact same second as my mother.
