Chapter 13: Two Claimants
Yeon-hwa lowered the sword.
Her arms were shaking so badly she nearly dropped it.
"Get up," she said to the Great Elder. "All of you. I'm not anybody's Heavenly Demon. I'm a bride."
He didn't get up.
He lifted his head from the sand and looked at her with tears running into his white beard.
"Fifty years ago," he said, "at the Battle of the Black Ford, a righteous swordsman killed our Heavenly Demon in single combat."
His voice carried to every corner of the hall.
"He took the founding art from the Demon's body. We hunted that manual for fifty years."
He lifted his hand to the walls.
"Every heir since was crowned half-made, because no one could read these."
"What was his name?" Yeon-hwa said. "The swordsman."
"Nobody remembers a righteous swordsman's name, child. He was from some small sword house in the east."
She felt the floor tilt under her.
A small sword house in the east.
That house couldn't bear to throw away a peerless art.
So it gave the art a prettier name and taught it to its children in secret.
