Chapter 14: The Trial Ground
"He's betting right," Mu-hyeon said.
He said it to Pyo, not to Yeon-hwa.
"I won't lift a sword to her. Not on the cliff. Not anywhere."
"Then you die at dawn," Pyo said. "Again."
"Then I'll fight you myself," Yeon-hwa said. "Badly. And lose. And you'll be Heavenly Demon, and he can choke on it."
Mu-hyeon looked at her for a long moment.
"You'd do that? After what I just told you?"
"I don't know what I'd do," she said. "That's the truth. Ask me at dawn."
He nodded slowly.
Then he walked out of the yard, and she let him go.
Yeon-hwa didn't sleep.
She sat on her bed in his mother's red robes with her father's sword across her knees until the window went grey.
The trial ground was a circle of black stones on a shelf of rock at the very edge of the cliff.
Below it there was nothing.
Cloud, and the tops of pine trees a long way down.
The whole cult was there before the sun.
They stood packed along the rock wall behind the circle in silence, thousands of them, all the way up the path.
The Great Elder stood at the circle's edge in his purple robes, leaning on a staff.
He looked rested.
