"He says you told him you wanted to be alone," said Dagny. "He's obeying."
I pulled the door open.
Soren Vinter stood in the alley exactly one step back from the threshold.
It was a warm drizzle, and his hair was flat to his forehead.
He held a single index card in both hands, and the card was soaked.
"You asked to be alone," he said. "I took it literally."
"For an hour?"
"I started to think it was a mistake around minute twelve. I wanted to check the number."
"It's on his list," said Dagny, from the stairs. "I'm going to sit over here and not listen."
She sat on the third step with her chin on her fists and listened with her whole body.
I stepped back.
Soren came in and put the card on the steel table, flat, so the ink wouldn't run any further.
It had two columns.
REASONS LOTTE SHOULD GO, said the left one.
Head of pastry. A team of six.
A salary large enough for shelves, so her lids can be left open in a proper place.
A kitchen where nobody makes her draw a chalk line.
