Chapter 21: Zeman and Vinter
Six hundred people held their breath.
I looked at Soren, and Soren looked at his index card, and the card said, in neat pencil, Yes.
He had written it before we left the shop.
"We are kissing," he announced to the gym, in the voice of a man reading from the minutes.
"Thank you," I said. "We'll take it from here."
I grabbed the front of his shirt with both fists and pulled.
It was not a Tab 12 kiss, or a Back Room kiss, or a kiss behind a tablecloth.
It was the first time I had kissed Soren Vinter with every light on and six hundred witnesses, and I did it thoroughly.
His hands came up to my face, and the stack of index cards fell on the basketball court.
I felt him smile against my mouth, which was a new sensation.
The gym came apart.
Somebody blew an air horn, and the mayor banged her gavel until the head flew off it.
The hardware man shouted "Pay up!" and six or seven people dug out their wallets at the same time.
"I had July ninth!" said the pharmacist.
"I had the blackout!" cried a woman in a visor.
"I had never," said the feed-store man, sadly, to his own shoes.
