Chapter 16: Where the Flood Starts
It took Ma Dechang until dusk to pull down his gate.
He did it with a crowbar and his own two hands, in front of a ring of farmers, and nobody helped him.
Hongde watched the first hour from his camp chair.
Then he stood, brushed off his black coat, and said pleasantly, "A very instructive morning. I shall leave you to it."
He walked back to his barge.
The black and gold boat slid out into the current and was gone around the bend before the first red plank hit the ground.
The rain stopped at nightfall.
At the third bell, a bell began to ring on the lower dike, wild and fast.
Liyan was up before he knew he had moved.
He ran out with his boots unlaced and found Ayu on the schoolhouse step, pointing.

It was black and thick as ink, and it was climbing.
Even from here he could hear the sound, a low continuous grinding.
"Hongde," said Mingjue, behind him.
He had come out in the gray robe, barefoot.
