Bev gave me the stage-door key at five in the morning, with her eyes shut.
"I'll be in the truck," she said. "Asleep. I sleep very hard."
"You always say that."
"I always mean it."
The Garden was empty again, with three work lights burning and twenty thousand seats climbing into the dark.
I stood at centre stage in my boots, and for once I did not feel small.
Fraser stood beside me with his arm against mine, the way he had in Atlanta.
"You never answered me," he said.
"On the bus."
"Aye. I'd like it in the daylight."
"Headliner," I said. "My name above yours, my set, my band. You can open."
He laughed, a big one, with the bottom in it, and the Garden gave it back to him a second and a half later.
"I'll open," he said. "I'll carry your amp."
"Dougie carries the amp."
"Then I'll sing harmony, badly."
"You'll sing it perfectly, and you'll hate it."
"Aye."
I took the Sharpie out of my pocket, the same one from the rain in Chicago, and put it in his hand.
