Chapter 20: The Burning
"Walk beside me," Isabeau said.
Veyron buckled on his cracked breastplate, and Wenna put the ledger in her arms.
They walked out of the ruined tent together into the cold gold dawn.
The camp had stopped.
Twenty thousand men stood in the ranks, with torches guttering and spears angled.
Every one of them had seen the sky split open an hour ago.
On the hill ahead of them stood the Wheel.
It was a great pale disc on its black timber frame, with sixteen acolytes standing around it.
In front of it, on a platform of white stone, stood Maximin Ellistrand in his gold-threaded robes.
On the far ridge, behind them, Torvin's army waited in the grey light, six thousand horned shapes with their swords drawn.
Maximin lifted a hand.
"My child," he said. "I'm glad you decided to be sensible."
