Chapter 7: Slow Down
I put the phone down.
I sat down on Gran's stool, which I never did.
Shauna was beside me in two seconds.
"What."
"The baby's small. They want to see me at two."
Gran put her beading down.
"I'll call a cab," she said.
"Cabs take forty minutes at lunch." Shauna was already at the window. "His van's outside."
"Shauna, no."
She was out the door before I could stand up.
I watched her run across Tremont Street in her thread-covered smock and bang on the side of the Kehoe Tailoring van, where Aidan was hanging suits on the rail inside.
She talked with both hands.
He listened for a moment.
Then he shut the back doors, got into the driver's seat, and pulled a U-turn across two lanes of Tremont Street that made a cyclist swear at him.
He stopped in front of our step and leaned over to open the passenger door.
"Get in," he said.
"I can take a cab."
"You can take a cab next time."
I got in.
The van smelled like wool and steam and coffee.
Behind me, eleven morning suits swung on their rail in plastic bags.
"I've got deliveries in Newton," Aidan said. "They'll keep."
He didn't say anything else the whole way to the hospital.
He drove with both hands on the wheel.
At the hospital he parked in a spot that said Ambulances Only and came inside with me anyway.
"You'll get towed."
"Then I'll walk home."
The ultrasound room was dark and cold.
The technician put the gel on my stomach and turned the screen toward me.
There she was.
Small. Curled. One hand up by her face like she was thinking.
Her heart was going.
The doctor watched the screen for a long time.
"She's small," the doctor said. "But the blood flow through the cord looks good. Fluid's normal. This is a watch, not a worry."
