Chapter 10: The Shower

The bridal shower was held in Trenton's mother's garden, under a white tent, with thirty women and a three-tier cake.

I had been there before, in June, as the fiancée.

Her roses were still blooming, and the guest book was the same guest book, with Brynn's name added in a new line at the top.

Trenton's mother met me at the gate and took both my hands.

"Corina, dear. I was so worried." She searched my face. "He told me you two had ended things, but I never imagined you'd come."

"Trenton said we ended it?"

"He said it was mutual."

"I see."

She patted my fingers.

"Well. Brynn says you wanted to be part of this, so we will make you comfortable."

I had a seat at the end of the third table, between a cousin and a cake plate.

Brynn sat at the head in a white sundress with a veil pinned to her hair, and she looked wonderful.

She tapped a spoon on her glass.

"Ladies, I want to play a game," she said. "Tell the story of how you got together. I'll start."

Everyone applauded.

"Trenton and I have always been close," Brynn began. "But the day it happened was a Tuesday, and he was in a very good mood because he'd just been to the county clerk's office."

I set down my fork.

"He called me on the drive home. He had the phone on speaker." She laughed and covered her mouth. "He told me he'd made a bet about how someone would take the news, and I won."

A few women laughed politely.

"I won a perfume," Brynn said. "And a very special night."

Trenton's mother smiled with the confusion of someone who hadn't understood the joke.

"What news, dear?"

"Oh, nothing. A silly bet." Brynn turned her head and found me with her eyes. "Corina was there. Weren't you, Corina? You were in the car."
