Chapter 14: Friday Night
The general's lawyer took until eight on Friday night to finish the hold order.
I sat in Isaiah's truck outside the headquarters and watched the clock on the dash.
It was a one-page paper that said nothing leaves the motor depot records cage until further notice.
The sergeant major came down the steps with it at eight-oh-six and got in the back seat without a word.
"The colonel has not been told," he said.
"No, Sergeant Major," Isaiah said.
"The general would like to keep it that way until the building is secured."
"Yes, Sergeant Major."
I turned around in my seat.
"The cage has two keys," I said. "Both are on the colonel's ring."
"Then I'll have the lock cut."
"You'll ruin the cylinder, and the frame behind it."
"Ms. Burris, I have a bolt cutter and an order."
"I have a third key."
Nobody spoke.
Isaiah's hands stayed on the wheel, but I saw them tighten.
"I cut it Tuesday in my truck, before I left the lot," I said. "I told nobody."
