Chapter 15: The Trunk
Isaiah took the stairs three at a time, and I went after him.
He had the truck started before I shut my door.
"There's one road off this post," he said. "I'll cut across the lot."
The truck hit the curb and bounced onto the grass.
We tore past the commissary, past the dark flagpole, and came out on the gate road with the barrier arms ahead, white and red under the floodlights.
There were two lanes out.
Isaiah stopped the truck sideways across the near lane and jumped down.
The sedan was fifty yards back and still crawling, lights off.
When it saw the truck it put on its headlights.
The gate sergeant stepped out of the guard shack with one hand on his belt.
Isaiah had trained him.
"Mr. Doran," he said. "You can't park there."
"Sergeant, hold that sedan."
"Sir, you're suspended."
"I know I am. Hold it anyway."
The sedan pulled up to the barrier and its window came down.
Redfern's aide looked out, a young captain with a neat part in his hair and a wet shine on his forehead.
"Sergeant, I'm on the colonel's business," he said. "Raise the arm."
The gate sergeant looked at the aide.
He looked at Isaiah, standing in the lane in dress greens with no badge.
He looked at me, climbing out of the truck.
"Sir," he said to the aide. "I don't have a reason to stop you."
"Then raise the arm."
"I'll have to ask, sir."
I walked to the back of the sedan.
The trunk lid hung open an inch.
I lifted it.
