Chapter 16: The Mother at the Counter

Isaiah put the truck in park and looked at the woman through the windshield.

"Do you know her?"

"No."

"Do you want me to stay?"

"No," I said. "If she came to see me, she came to see me."

He squeezed my hand once and I got out.

The woman on the step was about sixty.

Her scarf was tied under her chin, and her church coat was buttoned wrong by one button.

She did not move when I came up.

"Are you Jessamine Burris?"

"I am."

"I'd like to talk to you, and I don't want to do it on the street."

I unlocked the door and held it open.

She stepped inside and stood in the middle of the shop, looking at the key blanks, the pegboard and the register.

I turned on the lights and the coffee maker.

She set the framed photograph on my counter and turned it to face me.

A boy in a dress uniform looked out of it.

He was about twenty-two, with ears that stuck out and a grin he had clearly tried to hold back.

"My son," she said. "He drove the first truck."
