Chapter 20: The Memorial Run
It was nineteen degrees at a quarter to six on the twenty-second of November, and the main gate of Fort Merrow was lit.
I stood outside it in my good blouse and my father's old wool coat, with Isaiah on one side and Marva on the other.
Marva had brought a thermos, and she poured from it without being asked.
Behind the gate, three hundred soldiers in gray shirts were warming up on the road in the dark.
Their breath hung over them.
On the town side of the fence, people had begun to gather along Depot Street with coffee cups.
The two men from the diner window were among them.
Neither had a cap on.
"They came," Isaiah said.
"They came to look."
"Same thing, some days."
Three small groups stood in the cleared space at the front of the gate.
A woman in a church coat held a framed photograph against her chest.
She saw me and lifted her chin once.
Beside her stood a gray-haired woman with Isaiah's heavy brows, who held a second photograph.
She had her other hand over her mouth.
Isaiah walked to her, and she took his face in her hands.
