Chapter 10: Curfew

On Thursday at nine o'clock I walked into the Dean's office and asked for a late pass.

She looked up from a stack of papers and took her glasses off.

She was a thin woman in her sixties with a face like a closed gate.

"The library stays open until midnight for seniors," she said. "You don't need a pass."

"I know. I want one anyway, with the time on it." I put the paper on her desk. "I'll be at the long table by the window until midnight. The librarian can sign me out when I leave."

"Why?"

"Because I'd like it on the record where I was."

She studied me for a long moment.

"Miss Brannigan, are you in trouble?"

"Not yet."

Her expression softened for a second.

It wasn't quite warmth, but she wrote the time on the pass, 9:04 p.m., signed it with her own pen, and handed it back.

At 9:30 Hattie slid into the chair across from me with a pencil behind her ear and a thermos.

"I've got eyes on the boys' house from the north stairs," she whispered. "My dad says the housemaster has already had two phone calls tonight, both anonymous."

"Is Nash in his room?"

"Pacing. He looked like a man waiting for a dentist."

At 10:15 a sophomore with a watch walked past our table and went into the stacks.

At 10:30 the librarian came by to remind us she was locking the front doors at midnight.

I waited with a chemistry book open to the wrong page and my heart going like a drum.

At 10:41 Hattie's phone buzzed.

She looked down, read it, and put her hand over her mouth.

"What?"

"The housemaster just went upstairs." She was shaking. "Teddy was with him. Teddy was on the landing like a puppy, telling him there's a girl in Nash's room."

I got up.

I walked to the library's tall window and pressed my forehead to the cold glass.
