Chapter 15: Silver

Hester took the silver out of him on her kitchen table.

I held the lamp.

Dunne held Torin's shoulders, and Torin held the edge of the table with both hands, and nobody told him it would be all right.

She had a pair of long tongs and a bowl of cold water and a leather strap, which he declined.

"You'll bite your tongue off," she said.

"I'd rather bite my tongue off than yours."

"Ha," said Hester. "He's got jokes."

She worked fast.

The bullet came out in a gush of bright blood, and Torin made a sound I will remember until I die.

He didn't scream.

He just let a long low breath go through his teeth.

His knuckles went white on the table.

His eyes found mine over the lamp and stayed there.

The metal fell into the bowl with a tiny clink.

It had left a black star on his skin, and the star kept spreading.

"Silver burn," Hester said. "It'll draw out if we're quick. Linnea, I need your hands."

"What do I do?"

"Hold the wound open. Keep your thumbs there. Don't let it close."
