Chapter 22: Lorelei Runs
Lorelei made it forty yards.
She went across the open grass in her white dress with the chip of the Stone held against her chest.
The ring of kneeling wolves turned their heads to watch her go.
I did not chase her.
I stood on the Altar on four feet, and I breathed out, and the Beta rose.
He did not wait for an order.
He went after her with six others, low and silent.
They came around her at the tree line in a half circle.
She skidded.
She tried to turn, and there was a grey wolf there too.
Cormick stepped out of the pines in front of her, with his hands empty.
"Where are you going?" he said.
"Let me by."
"I don't think so."
"It's mine," Lorelei said. "It's the heart of the Stone, and I'm the Alpha's blood. Everyone knows I'm the Luna."
Her voice had gone high and thin.
"Nobody here knows that," Cormick said.
I changed back on the Altar.
It was easier than ever, and I wrapped myself in the coat someone threw to me.
I came down the steps and across the grass, and the pack made a path for me on both sides.
Lorelei saw me coming, and her face changed.
"Calla," she said. "Cal. Please."
"You said that to me once."
"I was frightened."
"You were not frightened. You were sent."
"He made me!"
"Say that louder," I said. "So they can hear."
The silence behind me spread out through the ring.
Lorelei looked past my shoulder at two hundred people.
She looked at Edric lying on the Altar, grey and slack, with two men kneeling at his side.
She understood that nobody was coming.
"I was fourteen," she said. Her voice cracked. "He picked me. He said I was clever. He said if I got close to you, I'd be Luna one day and everyone would love me."
